It’s troubled, and expensive, development is well documented and it’s perhaps notable that it’s not one of the three franchises mentioned in the Rockstar quote about sequels at the top of the page. That alone makes a third game unlikely, especially given how more realistic graphics would put the game, and the games industry at large, under even more public scrutiny.Īlthough a reasonable-sized hit by most standards, at around 4 million worldwide, you do get the feeling that Max Payne 3 was not the success Rockstar was hoping for. Manhunt 2 pulled in less than the first game and even that never managed to get to 2 million worldwide. In some ways more controversial than even GTA, and certainly more violent, the second Manhunt game is further proof that controversy doesn’t always sell. In fact there’s more hard evidence for Bully 2 than there is Red Redemption 2, with the composer of the first game’s soundtrack letting slip he’s working on a sequel and Rockstar themselves having recently copyrighted the words ‘Bully Bullworth Academy: Canis Canem Edit’. It certainly had its fans though, including Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser – who more than once has talked about wanting to do a sequel. So they most be working on something, and considering Red Dead is Rockstar’s second most successful franchise it seems reasonable to assume another sequel is imminent-ish.ĭespite all the controversy over its name Rockstar’s GTA-at-a-boarding-school wasn’t a massive hit. But although each of the various Rockstar studios usually end up helping out on every major new game Rockstar San Diego hasn’t led a project since Red Dead Redemption in 2010, and they’ve been on a hiring spree recently. There’s even a rumour that it’s called Red Dead Rebellion, despite a lack of any real evidence from Rockstar themselves. This is the most popular guess for what Rockstar are going to unveil next. Given the quality of GTA V’s graphics they’re going to stay state-of-the-art for a long time, and a new game using the same engine would make it easier to connect it to GTA Online. That’s what they did with GTA III, when they made Vice City and San Andreas, and there’s nothing to say they won’t go back to that approach. However, that doesn’t mean that they won’t create un-numbered sequels using the same game engine as GTA V. There were five years between GTA V and VI, and given the speed that Rockstar usually work at there seems no reason to assume the next one will be any quicker.

Rockstar has admitted they’re already thinking about what to do about the next mainline sequel, although it doesn’t sound like they’ve got very far: ‘We don’t know what GTA VI will be, but we’ve got some ideas’ is all they’ve said. Considering the amount of hints about UFO related stuff in GTA V, some sort of alien invasion plot might seem a reasonable guess. It’s possible they may go for something similar to Red Dead Redemption’s Undead Nightmare, which had nothing to do with the main story and switched genres from western to zombie horror.
